juan atkins returns to r&s on a model 500 solo mission. the last model 500 single enlisted the help of the live line up that includes detroit techno royalty mike banks and ur alumni mark taylor, but this latest release is just juan in the studio and back at his best. >control< is vintage model 500, the classic electro that atkins pretty much invented, with his treated vocals riding over the crisp rhythm programming, dark basslines and detroit synths. >the messenger< on the flip is a moodier affair, with the liquid synths almost running away with themselves over the rough beats. model 500 and r&s has proved to have been a classic combination over the years and this release is one to file next to the classics.

despite the doors being closed on dissident in 2009, former boss andy blake has been anything but quiet, with his world unknown imprint bringing the acid and ebm sounds of his night of the same name to the world. now hes started another label, in plain sight, which looks set to bring more esoteric house sounds to our ears, with the first release coming from the hitherto unknown youngtee. the first track, >dr chocolate< fuses the kind of oddball low-slung sounds and spoken-word samples that in flagranti have been masters of for years, with jazzy keys and 808 cowbells which hint at a subtle chicago influence. the classic house influence continues of >perfect model<, which combines misty chords with an 80s pop groove, falsetto vocal sample and synth jam solo which comes across as alternate universe michael jackson track. as youd expect from a label curated by blake, its house music, but not quite as you know it.

the detroit area artist/producer once called ibex is no more. due to other artists copying the ibex brand, tony ollivierra will now be recording as his real name under his new label northside district. this first release demonstrates a continued appreciation for the roots of electronic music, with several of these tracks sounding like they were buried in a time capsule back in 1987, and unearthed after marinating for twenty years or so. this should come as no surprise, since tony has been producing tracks for about that long.

token is 5 years old. i never planned to do anything special for this occasion. however, when i received these 2 new tracks from phase, all just fell into place. this release pretty much sums up what token stands for since day one. both tracks are fierce pieces of relentless yet deep techno, in-your-face yet very subtle rhythms, all credited to phases detailed drum programming, keen sense of atmospherics & sound processing.

bestworks records proudly presents the debut of two young aspiring producers from berlin: felix fisher and fabian dikof. several years ago both of them learned their first skills in a youth project which was developed and run by non other than label owner and producer andre lodemann in a small town erkner on the outskirts of berlin, germany. this release is a beautiful connection between andre lodemanns former job as a street/social-worker and his work today as a producer and dj on the international circuit. the track by felix fisher is a more detroit orientated tech-house track with a darker approach and fabian dikofs is more dubby-house influenced. christian prommer and phoniques remixes give the release a great twist in other musical directions.

its been 16 years since aquasky first started bashing out the beats on moving shadow and 10 years since they released the mind altering >777< on botchit & scarper. during these 16 years aquasky have messed about with most genres at most tempos... but always retaining their trademark bass and their retro rave vibes.and here we are... the first ep from their long awaited follow up album to >teamplayers< released on passenger back in 2006. going back to their tear-out roots and fully embracing the modern production sound of now along with a firm 140bpm footing, aquasky come out fighting. >raise the devil< is an albums worth of tracks that will awaken your inner devil... powerful, noisy, aggressive and militant. taking it back to the days when people partied hard in abandoned warehouses and muddy fields. but, i expect you know all of that already... its what aquasky do, and its what they do well!

on brothers in loves first release, max k. gets right down to business introducing himself and this family project: booming kick drums, thumping toms side by side with sharp hi-hats and staccato claps. machine grooves with sounds as raw as the musical approach of the artist. >losing your cool< builds on a massive kick drum, with a tom groove shuffling the track. it develops into a late summer bloom, which is over as fast as this years berlin summer was – with piercing percussion to remind you that winter is already here! >overdrive<, the first track on the flip, starts as a heavy slow groover with thumping kick, crashing snare and acidic synth lines until a punishing hook enters knocking you upside the head. the second track on the b-side, >indulgence< comes disguised as a stepper with a raw, pulsating analog bass line, but reaches its apex with a whirling synth lead on top of a vocal that could never be classified as your ordinary preachapella.

with the 2001 release of the fruit bats debut album, echolocation, eric d. johnson embarked on a career in music that has, to date, included ten years with the fruit bats, sideman duties for bands including califone, vetiver and the shins, and more recently, soundtrack work for films like ceremony and the soon-to-be-released paul rudd comedy our idiot brother. tripper, the new and fifth fruit bats full-length, was recorded at wacs studio in los angeles with thom monahan, best known as producer for the last four vetiver albums, devendra banharts cripple crow, and the pernice brothers.
